FIREPLACES

FIREPLACE 25: Tile Art Design’s client for this fireplace project below requested that we create a wisteria vine mosaic like the fireplace surround in the Frank Lloyd Wright Darwin Martin home, which was recently restored in Buffalo, NY. After discussing the project over the phone, additional materials were added for the 18” wide sides of this fireplace, with a simple pattern using the same 3” square field tiles used as the background on the face of the fireplace surround, and with the same mottled brown ½” square mosaics used to represent the vines on the surround face. The colors of the flowers changed from being shades of amber and rust as in the original fireplace, to lavender and amethyst. Small organic shaped glass tiles were used to represent these.

We used a ring saw to cut all of the pieces representing leaves from organic-shaped pieces of tile that we had in stock. The ring saw was also used to cut all of the curved shaped pieces of 3” field tiles, to maintain the 3" grid in the background, as per the original design.

The original Frank Lloyd Wright design was placed in the first drawing below to show the concept. The next drawing shows the mosaic for the face of the fireplace, prior to installation in Aurora, NY, in 2024.

It's more beautiful than I pictured in my head.” Dannin C., Aurora NY

“We are so happy with the tiles you helped us select and design…We are so thankful to have found you. You had the most beautiful, high quality tile selections we had seen in our two years of searching. You were so helpful to us throughout the whole process of selecting, designing, and following up to make sure we were happy with everything. Our tiles are a favorite characteristic of our new home. The backsplash and fireplace turned out beautiful for our Craftsman style home. The acorn relief tiles were a wonderful choice. They fit the theme of our home, nestled in the woods full of oak trees.” Rebecca & Michael H., Wausau WI

“I wholeheartedly recommend Tile Art Design. I am working on my second project now, and I continue to value and be grateful for how carefully you work with and listen to your clients…I found you because…TileArt knows the details of Motawi tile and their quality, and TileArt consciously works only with labor-friendly and environmentally responsible companies. After I started our first project with you, I found that Tile Art Design had designed tile installations for two of my friends, in their kitchen remodels. There is a particular, honoring way that people talk about you and your work. What stands out in their words is how very much they love the beauty you have brought into their homes.” Susan O., Madison WI
