FIREPLACE 29: Tile Art Design designed and furnished a fireplace surround and hearth with Motawi Tileworks handmade field tiles, relief tiles, and the Pine Landscape as a focal point, displayed above. The original Pine Landscape series shown in this fireplace has been retired by Motawi Tileworks.

FIREPLACE 28: Tile Art Design designed and created our second Wisteria Vine Mosaic Fireplace surround and hearth, displayed above. The installation was completed during June, 2025.

The merged photos below show the layout of this Wisteria Vine Fireplace surround and hearth prior to installation, with clear contact tape on the surface of the mosaic sheets. Each sheet is numbered and marked to show how the adjoining sheets fit together.

This mosaic in the fireplace surround includes 10 glass tulips with leaves and stems, and lush, drooping clusters of wisteria flowers. Also, there are 79 custom-cut marble leaves along the vines.

Our client lives southeast of Nashville by Wiggins Creek, in Tennessee, so this creek was mapped out. The glass creek flows in the hearth, through a 1” square field made up of glass-glazed ceramic tiles, metal-capped ceramic tiles with bas-relief designs of flowers and birds, and slate tiles. - Shipped March 17, 2025.

FIREPLACE 27: Tile Art Design’s client for this fireplace project below requested that we create a wisteria vine mosaic like the fireplace surround in the Frank Lloyd Wright Darwin Martin home, which was recently restored in Buffalo, NY. After discussing the project over the phone, additional materials were added for the 18” wide sides of this fireplace, with a simple pattern using the same 3” square field tiles used as the background on the face of the fireplace surround, and with the same mottled brown ½” square mosaics used to represent the vines on the surround face. The colors of the flowers changed from being shades of amber and rust as in the original fireplace, to lavender and amethyst. Small organic shaped glass tiles were used to represent these.

We used a ring saw to cut all of the pieces representing leaves from organic-shaped pieces of tile that we had in stock. The ring saw was also used to cut all of the curved shaped pieces of 3” field tiles, to maintain the 3" grid in the background, as per the original design.

The original Frank Lloyd Wright design was placed in the first drawing below to show the concept. The next drawing shows the mosaic for the face of the fireplace, prior to installation in Aurora, NY, in 2024.

FIREPLACE 26: Tile Art Design furnished the fireplace tiles, and we provided design & installation services. The decorative tiles were handmade by Motawi Tileworks. The 1x4” and 1x1” Motawi field tiles, framing the 8x8” Motawi Songbirds and 4x8” Motawi Long Stem polychrome tiles, were used so that we could easily set these accents within the commercially manufactured field tiles. The hearth tiles were framed with a Schluter Schiene finishing and edge protection profile, with a minimal reveal to transition to the carpeting. Middleton, WI, 2022.

FIREPLACE 25: Tile Art Design provided design services and we furnished the handmade Syzygy Tile field tiles, Oak Leaf and Acorn relief tiles, crown moldings, and half round liners for this fireplace project below. Wausau, WI, 2021.

FIREPLACE 20: Tile Art Design provided design services and furnished the Motawi Tileworks handmade Pine Landscape tile mural, and we custom-designed the Motawi mosaic tiles for this fireplace.

This was one of ten interior and exterior Tile Art Design project areas at this home. The builder was awarded “2016 Gold Home of the Year” in Moore County, North Carolina. Installed in Southern Pines, NC, in 2015.
